Generalization Hierarchy
This standard hierarchy is sometimes used in generalizing of speech, voice, social or other targets addressed in speech, voice, social and communication skills therapy.
Imagine you are working on your voice and initiating conversation (i.e., social skills). You’ve learned the new skills through 12 weeks of speech therapy/social skills training. You’ve practiced it and feel ready to launch it. Where do you start? You can’t launch into a presentation using your new voice. You wouldn’t be prepared.
Therefore, we start “generalizing” at an easier task: stranger, smiling, hello.
Points Legend
WHAT
- Smile = 0
- Hello = 1
- How are you = 2
- Compliment = 4
- Comment/elaborate = 5
- Tell a story = 7
WHO
- Stranger = 2
- Acquaintance = 1
POSITION
- Walking = 0
- Standing = 1
- Sitting = 2
AUDIENCE
- 1-on-1 = 0
- Audience of 2-3 = 1
- Audience of 3+ = 2
