Adults with ASD
We help with ASD-related communication difficulties. Our approach treats social interaction as a learnable system with identifiable patterns and teachable strategies. We break down complex social situations into concrete components: what to observe, what it likely means, what to try next. Through evidence-based frameworks, we identify your specific learning patterns and build skills that actually transfer to your real environments. This isn’t about masking or performing—it’s about reducing friction so your expertise gets the attention it deserves.
Asperger’s, Asperger syndrome, ASD Level 1, and High-Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder are names for a collection of symptoms hallmarked by social communication and social skills difficulties (i.e., eye-gaze, facial expression, body posture, gestures, social and emotional reciprocity). Adults with this condition struggle socially and are often high-functioning in other areas of their lives, which can include academic or business success.
We work with adults who are diagnosed, adults who are not diagnosed, and others who suspect they are on the high-functioning end of the autism spectrum.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is increasingly recognized in adults, with estimates suggesting that around 1 in 54 individuals are diagnosed with ASD in the USA. The prevalence of ASD has risen over recent decades, attributed to broader diagnostic criteria and better awareness.
In Canada, approximately 1 in 66 children are identified as having autism; many continue to exhibit symptoms into adulthood. We estimate about 1.5-2% of adults have autism today.
Despite this, a significant number of adults with high-functioning autism experience challenges related to social communication and relationships. Overall, while awareness and diagnosis have improved, there remains a need for targeted support services for adults on the spectrum.
As of May 2013, when DSM-5 was published, the subcategory of Asperger syndrome was eliminated and the medical community began moving towards inclusion of the condition toward a broader diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
“Qualitative impairment in social interaction, as manifested by at least two of the following:
– Marked impairments in the use of multiple nonverbal behaviors such as eye-to-eye gaze, facial expression, body posture, and gestures to regulate social interaction
– Failure to develop peer relationships appropriate to developmental level
– A lack of spontaneous seeking to share enjoyment, interest or achievements with other people, (e.g., by a lack of showing, bringing, or pointing out objects of interest to other people)
– Lack of social or emotional reciprocity
– Restricted repetitive & stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests and activities
– The disturbance causes clinically significant impairments in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
– There is no clinically significant general delay in language
– There is no clinically significant delay in cognitive development or in the development of age-appropriate self-help skills, adaptive behavior (other than in social interaction) and curiosity about the environment in childhood.

— Criteria for Asperger’s Diagnosis – APA-DSM 5, 2013
Supporting adults with autism requires a focus on life skills, employment readiness/maintenance/progression, as well as social integration in a more independent context. Adults, particularly those who are high-functioning (formerly referred to as having Asperger’s syndrome), often face unique challenges such as navigating complex social situations and maintaining relationships (i.e., with bosses, colleagues, friends, romantic partners, and/or spouses).
High-functioning adults might struggle with issues related to identity and self-advocacy as they transition into adulthood.

Initiation Strategies
Develop context-specific opening lines that feel natural, not scripted. Learn to read social availability cues before jumping in. Build a flexible repertoire of conversation starters for networking events, team meetings, and casual encounters. Practice makes these automatic rather than exhausting.
Listening and Observation
Build systematic strategies for tracking nonverbal information—what does that posture shift mean? Is that pause confusion or disagreement? Learn where to look and what to track. Practice observing, checking your interpretation, and adjusting based on feedback. Develop active listening that balances hearing content with reading context.
Abstract and Inferential Communication
Learn concrete strategies for handling hints, sarcasm, and implied meaning. Practice clarifying questions that don’t make you seem lost. Build decision trees for testing interpretations before acting on them. Use real examples from your life to develop pattern recognition for social ambiguity.
Perspective-Taking
Build habits of checking what your listener already knows before you speak. Practice adjusting detail level on the fly based on audience cues. Use role reversal exercises to experience what it’s like to miss context. Develop automatic perspective checks that prevent confusion without slowing you down.
