Acting with an Accent

Accents & Casting Range: Why It Matters

Lately I’ve worked with a couple of local actors who want to augment their accents. They’ve explained that a foreign accent can limit the range of roles they’re considered for. Just as a casting director looks for a certain physical look, they’re also listening for a voice that fits the character. Fair enough.

How We Train: Vowels, Consonants, Intonation

With my actors, we often work directly on scripts to prepare for booked roles. We also build audition material, focusing on vowel shaping, consonant clarity, and intonation patterns. Regional vowel differences make up a large part of the accent challenge, so we target them explicitly alongside rhythm and stress.
